The mandate

GIA was appointed to undertake an in-depth assessment of the market for Tier 4+ clean-cooking technologies in Malawi. The World Bank required a comprehensive view of demand, supply and financing to inform its intervention strategy.

  • Demand-side assessment: in-depth analysis of demand for Tier 4+ clean-cooking technologies in Malawi.
  • Supply-side assessment: examination of the supply side of the clean-cooking market.
  • Financing tools and strategies: assessment of financing approaches to support potential interventions.
  • Strategic recommendations: bringing the market and financing analysis together and presenting the findings to the World Bank to inform its intervention strategy.

Informing the intervention strategy

GIA completed the assessment and presented its findings to the World Bank. The World Bank subsequently introduced a clean-cooking component in Malawi, which is active as of September 2026.
